It is true. I believe if you purchase AppleCare for your iPod before it's a year old (and I think that's $69.99), you can get a battery replacement for a bit cheaper. But yeah. Sucks, don't it?
However -- they're wrong about the $250 charge. Apple charges $99 for battery replacement. Also, I made a mistake - applecare is only $59.
